About

Lewes Saturday Folk Club Workshop No 309 - PETE SHEPHEARD & ARTHUR WATSON BALLAD FORUM

Pete and Arthur bring together a wealth of song repertoire gleaned directly from the many traditional singers they have known, and unaccompanied song is at the heart of their enthusiasm.  Both were members of the band Shepheard, Spiers and Watson.  Arthur was also a member of the well-respected group The Gaugers.  Both have been involved in running the annual Fife Traditional Singing Festival.

Pete & Arthur will each sing some ballads and facilitate a discussion drawn from aspects of ballad singing that interest the group (history, performance, varying versions, magic, folklore & so on).  You are invited to bring along at least one traditional ballad of your choice to sing and talk about.  To avoid clashes with other contributors, please state your preferred ballad in advance.  If your choice has already been taken, we will let you know so that you can choose another.  If you're not sure what counts as a ballad, email or ring 01273 476757 for a friendly chat about it.

Pete Shepheard - Pete is a fine singer & melodeon player, singing many songs he has collected from travellers in the British Isles, beginning with the famed Stewart Family of Blairgowrie and Jeannie Robertson's family in Aberdeen. He has collected songs & music from the Romany gypsies of Gloucestershire & the Scottish travelling & farming communities in Fife, Tayside and Aberdeenshire. In 1973 he founded Springthyme Records, specialising in traditional music and songs.

Arthur Watson - Arthur is steeped in the music of North-east Scotland. He plays whistles both big and small and has a particular enthusiasm for the older ballads.
