Whether you're visiting the district of Lewes for the first time, or you're a a resident with a burning question, we've put together some frequently asked questions to try and shed some light on some common queries. The district of Lewes covers around 113 square miles. Stretching as far as North as Sheffield Park and as far south as Seaford. Lewes also has 9 miles of coastline and encompasses towns such as Peacehaven, Newhaven, Rodmell, Falmer, Glynde, Firle, Ringmer, Plumpton, Ditchling, Chailey and more. The town's population is estimated at just over 100,000 (2017 est).
The common misconception is that Lewes is pronounced 'Looes' but it's pronounced 'Lewis'
Southern Rail operate the train lines in the district, with numerous stations along the Eastbourne to London or Eastbourne to Brighton routes. Train stations include Seaford, Bishopstone, Newhaven Harbour, Newhaven Town, Southease, Lewes, Falmer and Glynde. The main bus companies that operate around the district are Brighton & Hove, Compass, and Cuckmere.
Parking is limited in Lewes town but the main car parks are located at the train station and behind Waitrose. Smaller pay and display car parks can be found at the Needlemakers, East Street, Railway Lane, and more. For a full list, visit www.lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk
The coastline within the district runs from Seaford to Saltdean. Parking along Seaford seafront is free all day every day.
Lewes is the county town as it is the location of administrative and judicial functions within the county. East Sussex County Council Main offices and the Crown Court are both located in Lewes.
Lewes Bonfire Night celebrations are well known within East Sussex. Organised by Lewes Bonfire Council, it's one of the biggest fifth of November celebrations in the world. There are seven different bonfire societies that put on processions and host fire sites. Most fire sites are ticketed and these can be purchased in advance, some are free. Lewes town is incredibly busy on Bonfire Night and due to Health & Safety restrictions, a number of planned closures are put in place for parking, train stations and main roads to restrict the flow of people into the town.
