Welcome to our first concert as part of our Musical Musings!
Beethoven – a pioneer for musical freedom whose "hero" and god-like legacy stood in the way of our appreciation of other 19th century music. Many outstanding composers, specially women, have been overshadowed by his legacy.
This concert will reexamine the influence of Beethoven's compositions in the careers of 19th century female composers, who took inspiration from his pieces to create their own. Fanny Hensel-Mendelssohn and Louise Farrenc will be the two heroic women that we have chosen as an example of how, even if the Romantic society tried to suppress and reject any artistic expression produced by women, there are masterpieces composed by female artists that defied the establishment from the intimacy of their salons to the public spaces of conservatories and concert halls.
Set in the picturesque Lewes, Cliffe Hall's beautiful interior is the perfect setting for our Musical Musings.
