Making a welcome come-back, the Lewes Fossil Festival will coincide with the 200th anniversary of the recognising and naming of Iguanadon, one of the first land dinosaurs by Lewes-born Gideon Mantell.
A morning with many hands-on activities for children - fossil exhibitions, treasure hunt and bookstall. Bring along your own fossils to show our experts and identify them.
Refreshments. Children £3, adults free. All children to be accompanied by an adult.
Also screenings of the 12-minute film of the 'St George and the Iguanodon' Mummers Play. This was filmed around Lewes in 2011 with the addition of an Iguanodon instead of the usual dragon for St George to fight. Look out for local doctor Gideon Mantell and Richard Owen, founder of the Natural History Museum, slugging it out over which name – dinosaur or iguanodon - should prevail.
Run in conjunction with Lewes U3a Geology Group.
