Join critically acclaimed pianist Melyvn Tan, members of the Piatti Quartet, and special guest reader, the actor Nathaniel Parker, for an evening of music and word. As well as works by Debussy and Ravel, Tan will perform Messiaen's 'Quartet for the End of Time'.
Messiaen wrote 'Quartet for the End of Time' in 1941 whilst in a Silesian prisoner of war camp. During the harsh winter he was sustained by the sound of bird song and a visionary passage from Revelations which inspired his most iconic composition. Reflecting on time and immortality, the piece evokes colour and form, fire and ice, the trumpets of the Apocalypse and the ascent to Paradise.
Birdsong is one of the most evocative sounds in nature, inspiring composers throughout history such as Messiaen, Debussy and Ravel. Debussy and Ravel's compositions for solo piano echo the birdsong infused throughout 'Quartet for the End of Time.'
Spanning Shakespeare, Keats, T.S Eliot, Virginia Woolf and Olivier Messiaen himself, the accompanying readings offer their own mysterious dialogue with the music.
A pre-event talk at 6.15pm on birdsong in music will be given by Paul Boucher, the curator and research director of The Montagu Music Collection at Boughton House, Northamptonshire.
