Every year thousands of people visit Lewes during the second weekend in September to visit buildings not usually open to the public, or to take guided walks around the town. Heritage Open Days is a national event, free to all, with programmes drawn up by local people.
This year, Lewes’ theme is its building materials, with, for example, Caen stone, flint work and mathematical tiles being unique to the area: there are conducted tours by experts around the townscapes involved.
There are also several private residences opening their doors, as well as public buildings such as Lewes Prison and the Law Courts. For full details go to the Heritage Open Days website, or pick up a leaflet from the Lewes, Seaford or Eastbourne Tourist Information Centres.
Some events require booking in advance, and these fill up quickly, so plan your visit now.
