Lapwing Music Festival

About

The Lapwing Festival is a unique event celebrating its fourth year in 2019. Six outstanding artists will perform in the magical setting of the Coastguard Cottages, Cuckmere Haven. Situated in a cosy, acoustic marquee with views of the cottages, the Cuckmere Valley and the cliffs of the Seven Sisters, this is the most beautiful concert venue in the world. Only 60 tickets are available for each of these incredibly intimate recitals. Profits will be donated to the Cuckmere Haven SOS campaign, which seeks to save the cottages from coastal erosion.

Lapwing has an established tradition of hosting renowned solo artists to present deeply personal recitals. In 2019 we have another stellar series of performers. Masayoshi Fujita is a Japanese, Berlin-based vibraphone player, pushing the boundaries of the instrument with his own deeply contemplative and evocative compositions. Fran and Flora are "a string duo bound for glory" (BBC Radio 3). With a distinctive improvisatory style and ethereal aesthetic, they draw inspiration for their material from their travels and mentors in eastern Europe and beyond. Sam Lee is an award-winning singer who traverses many worlds, challenging and pioneering folk music in diverse places and ways. He will share his story of song collection over a 90-minute journey. The Consone Quartet have established themselves as one of the most outstanding young string quartets in the UK, with recent success at the Royal Over-Seas League Ensemble Prize in London and the York Early Music International Young Artists Competition. They will present a stunning program of Haydn. Joseph Tawadros AM is a leading Oud virtuoso, composer and 4 time ARIA award winner. Born in Cairo and raised in Australia, he is currently living in London. We are thrilled to welcome him back to Lapwing for the second time. Anthony Albrecht, our festival director and a Juilliard-trained cellist, will also play solo Bach.

The festival also features a sumptuous Sunday lunch, with a guest speaker to be announced. Guests will have the chance to meet the artists and learn more about the environmental and historical significance of this stunning location from representatives of Cuckmere Haven SOS. We look forward to welcoming people to Cuckmere Haven to help save one of the iconic views of England.
