Kino Collective's Weird & Wonderful Film Festival is a chance for us, Kino Collective, a group of young film programmers with a burning passion for cinema, to focus even closer on one area of cinema that we are all simultaneously enchanted and baffled by: experimentalism and surrealism.
Usually, many people will hear the words 'experimental' or 'surreal' and instantly feel intimidated. Due to this, we wanted to give the opportunity for people to get over that fear with four of our favourite weird and wonderful films: Persona, Mulholland Drive, 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Ghost Story. We have chosen these four films specifically for their close relation to each other thematically but also because of how impactful they are, highlighting the true appeal of ambiguous cinema: the aftermath. Each of these four films have left most of us thinking, thinking about the film, the film's contents and contexts and the relation of the film to real life. Experimental cinema allows viewers to explore ideas that relate to themselves in more visceral and abstract ways and we thought this the perfect experience to introduce to audiences, familiar or unfamiliar with the category.
Due to our goal of bringing young people into the cinema, we also wanted to give young people the opportunity to see their films shown at our festival. We are showing a selection of short films made by film students from the local area alongside short films by industry professionals to highlight not only local talent but small snapshots of the weird and wonderful for more bite-sized doses! These films will be put into a 'loop' of films that will be played a total of four times throughout the day.
There will also be bands, a vegan barbecue and a film quiz, so please join us in celebrating the weird and the wonderful as well as our local talent!
