Jill Pidd & Doc Rowe sing traditional unaccompanied songs with charm, grace and authenticity. Jill was in a trio with Mike & Ann Waterson which performed under the inspired name of MichaelAnnJillo. Recordings of them were released last year as a CD, 'I'll Give You One More As You Go', in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support.
A deeply meaningful and dedicated singer of the tradition, Jill's powerful voice has an intense and uncompromising delivery coupled with a passionate respect of the ballad and story. A strong and frequently breathtaking singer, her rendering of traditional ballads with their strength of story has led to many superlatives.
Jill is also known to have been Fred Jordan's favourite woman singer. It was perhaps the most memorable - certainly the most difficult and emotional - performance of Jill's life to sing for Fred at his funeral in 2002. Additionally, she was proud to have toured as one of the Waterson's In the first half of the '90s - particularly on their USA tours.
Doc & Jill will give us two 45-minute slots and the rest of the evening is filled by members of the audience singing or playing if they wish to. Everyone is welcome, especially if you'd like to sing or play. We mostly sing and play traditional music from the British Isles, but we enjoy other styles as well. We always start off with some English dance tunes for anyone with an instrument to join in.
During the day Doc leads an all-day workshop on 'Seasons & Songs'. He is a brilliant collector of the traditional customs and songs of Britain with a phenomenal trove of videos, photos & sound recordings amassed over more than 50 years. He will share fascinating, entertaining gems from his collection. There will be songs to join in with as well as to listen to.
