Cable Hut 14 is a tiny but significant part of the world wide cable story that now sees 99% of international communication transported on the seabed.
Before 1850 communication overseas had to be delivered by ship and hand and took days if not weeks and months. Once the successful telegraph was established, the possibility of sending messages across the sea was the next step. It took a lot of trial and error along with financial backing to come up with the first successful under water cable. From this grew an industry with widespread social and economic impacts.
Today the global network spans 1.3 million kilometers with $10 trillion financial transactions every day. The cables carry everything from streaming videos and phone calls to credit card and ATM transactions. All at the speed of light.
Discover how this incredible technology has developed from a single copper wire to thousands of optical fibers.
The hut will be open to visitors for Heritage Open Days, including extensive displays to explain how this amazing technology developed and how Britain played a major part in its success.
