About

flock is an audio/visual work by Max Worgan and Pushkar Brand and is inspired by collective animal behaviour, specifically the the flocking behaviour of birds.

Using cutting edge A.I. techniques, the hidden emergent behaviour in a simulated flock of birds is captured in real-time and used to manipulate and reconfigure both an audio composition and a projected visual representation of the flock, processed through circuit bent analog hardware. The presence of audience members affects the simulated environmental conditions of the flock, and those resulting changes in dynamics feed back into the audio and visual systems.

The work explores different modes of interaction for audio/visual work, as well as looking at different ways to incorporate A.I. in creative work in order to expand and augment an artists creative toolkit.

Max Worgan's work draws on a range of musical influences, incorporating minimalism, electro-acoustic music, noise and algorithmic composition. A PhD candidate at Sussex University, Max is researching new compositional methods which use machine learning to analyse and understand complex dynamical systems found in nature. -

Pushkar Brand uses custom circuit bent analog video devices to explore the the glitches, instability and inherent errors found in the analog world. His work embraces the unpredictable fluctuations of his video glitch devices, exploring faults, missteps, blunders and blatant aberrations.

flock looks at the fragile and complex nature of systems all around us, and how we as observers are inexorably intertwined with them.
