Chamber Music in Art - Women in Portrait

About

Hundreds of women have gone unnoticed in art, and the music canon has proved no exception. According to research by DONNE*, only 11.45% of concerts scheduled for the 2020-2021 season include compositions by women – and this is in 100 orchestras from 27 countries.

For the third concert in Chamber Music in Art's inaugural season, the Lewes String Quartet, along with videographer & photographer Anna McGrane, have made it their mission to showcase some amazing female composers and their lesser-known works, in an artistic backdrop. Composers Rebecca Clarke, Ethyl Smyth and Elena Kats-Chernin will be explored in an interactive setting, where moving imagery meets thrilling playing in Cliffe Hall.

The Lewes String Quartet is no stranger to the Lewes Music scene. Currently all students at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, the ensemble aims to uphold the institution's 'creative conservatoire' status by regularly working with artists from a variety of disciplines. Through the Lewes Music Group, the LSQ will be continuing their interdisciplinary work in exciting locations, particularly through concerts in schools and elderly residential homes around Lewes and London.

Anna McGrane is a young London-based photographer and videographer known for her unique style and poetic vision of the world around her.
As audience members, your support will enable the Lewes Music Group, Chamber Music in Art and the Lewes String Quartet to continue bringing communities together, and to keep making classical music more accessible for everyone.

Set in the picturesque Lewes, Cliffe Hall's beautiful interior is the perfect setting for this innovative interactive approach to chamber music.
