Disabled pianist Sophia Benton together with fellow Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama pianist Misaki Nakamura, will present a piano duet concert of single-handed piano music which celebrates the skill and sensitivity of disabled/injured single-handed pianists.
After a netball injury in 2012, Sophia was diagnosed with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which left her unable to play with her right arm. She is the second person to go through UK Conservatoires as a left-hand alone pianist, following in the footsteps of fellow left-hand alone pianist and mentor Nicholas McCarthy, who graduated the Royal College of Music in 2012. Sophia has arranged the second part of Debussy's Petite Suite for one hand, and commissioned new works from RWCMD composers to be played in addition to Sadie Harrison's duets Work Songs and Kabul: When I Wake at Midnight that were written for Sophia and Nicholas in 2020.
Set in the picturesque Lewes, Cliffe Hall's beautiful interior is the perfect setting for our Chamber Music in Art series.
